“Thar, stop this!” she shouted across the metal platforms.
Her voice was almost drowned out by the raging thunderstorm over the valley. I stopped mid-step on the landing pad. I had hoped to enter my starship and be far from this planet to avoid this exact confrontation. I pivoted around and faced Ariella, the girl who I had once considered family; like a little sister. We practically grew up and trained together within the Jedi Academy. Her words usually spoke with truth somewhere in between her hyperactive rambling, but now her words rang hollow. Her blonde hair blew in the wind as the strong gusts flowed through the valleys of the barren mountains. I glared at her and waited for her to continue.
“Thar, you need to stop this. You haven’t fallen so far that redemption isn’t beyond your grasp!” she pleaded, “Come back to the light!”
“Never!” I shouted angrily, “The Jedi abandoned me; you abandoned me when I needed you most! I’m doing what I have to do.”
“You know that I can’t let you continue with your plan,” she said regrettingly, “I don’t want to fight you, but I will if I have too.”
“So be it,” I muttered as I drew my lightsaber and positioned myself to attack.
A red blade emerged with a loud hiss as my weapon activated. I took a step forward as I used the Force to launch myself toward my new found enemy. She switched her violet lightsaber on as I reached her. I swung my blade down hard but she dodged my attack. I stayed on the strong offensive while she defended herself adding in a jab and a swing occasionally to keep me off balance. The whir of the sabers was loud as they sliced through the air. The blades crackled and screeched under the strain of being bashed together. After several minutes, she reached out with the Force and threw me off balance to gain an advantage. She then swung her blade into the metal platform throwing sparks into my eyes. While I shielded myself, she made a quick incision into my weapon to render it useless. An additional rapid swing slashed into my leg and I fell to my knees in pain. The intense heat that radiated from her violet blade just centimeters from my neck informed me that she stood over me in victory
“Please, Thar. Don’t make me do this,” she begged with a quivering voice, “You can still come back!”
Without her knowledge, I carefully slipped a second lightsaber that I kept hidden within my robe into my hand.
“Ariella, perhaps you’re right,” I lied convincingly, “Perhaps I can still be redeemed. Help me!”
There it was. I sensed her lower her guard for just a second. It was all I needed. As quickly as I could, I stood to my feet, grabbed her hand that held her lightsaber, and simultaneously drew my second lightsaber to her chest and activated it. The red blade hissed to life, piercing her heart. Her weapon fell from her hand; deactivating before it hit the platform. I switched my weapon off and carried her to the ground. With her dying breath, she slowly whispered into my ear, “I’m sorry.”
